Motonaga gained international acclaim for his innovative abstract paintings and his historic "Water Sculpture" installations. Later in his career, he developed a highly distinct, playful aesthetic characterized by vibrant, humorous, fluid forms and smooth airbrushed-style color gradients. His works bridge the gap between high avant-garde abstract art and a whimsical, cartoon-like warmth. Today, Motonaga’s works are held in major permanent museum collections worldwide, including the Tate Modern (London), the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA, New York), and the Pompidou Centre (Paris).
