A stunning Kano school six-panel folding screen from the Edo period, painted on paper with a silver leaf ground.
The composition depicts a tranquil riverside landscape animated by bamboo, flowering shrubs, pine trees and rocky outcrops framing a gently winding stream rendered in blue pigments. Small birds perched along the water's edge, together with others in flight, enliven the scene, while the softly oxidised silver leaf background lends the composition a distinctive atmosphere and remarkable depth.
The harmonious balance between the natural elements and the shimmering surface reflects the refined decorative aesthetic of Japanese screen painting.
Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings.
---The byobu is in good condition. There are stains, tears, and oxidation to the surface. The silver leaf has been restored between the fifth and sixth panels. Minor wear to the lacquered frame, consistent with age. Please refer to the pictures for further details.
The item will be carefully packed and shipped accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity issued by Mastromauro Japanese art gallery based in Milan, Italy.
