Thank you for your understanding.Item DescriptionA striking Japanese ceramic flower vase (hanaki) in the form of a woven-handle basket, crafted in the Akazu-yaki (赤津焼) tradition of Aichi Prefecture, one of Japan's celebrated Six Ancient Kilns with a history stretching back over a thousand years. The piece features a beautifully textured, crackled stoneware body with a rich yellow glaze (kizeto-style) flowing into a deep green glaze (oribe-style) around the shoulder, a combination of glazes closely associated with the Akazu tradition.The vase takes the charming form of a handbag, complete with a woven bamboo/vine handle, and its rectangular body has crisp, angular lines that create a modern, sculptural silhouette. The surface is deliberately textured with fine crackling and rough patterning as part of the glaze design, an intentional decorative effect rather than damage; please see the Condition section below for further detail. The piece is inscribed on the base with the maker's mark, and comes complete with its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako), inscribed "花器 寺田稔作" ("Flower Vase, made by Terada Minoru").This is a wonderful decorative piece, equally at home displaying a single dramatic floral stem or standing alone as a sculptural ceramic object.

寺田稔 Terada Minoru — A ceramic artist working in the Akazu-yaki (赤津焼) tradition of Seto, Aichi Prefecture, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns with over a thousand years of ceramic history. Akazu-yaki is celebrated for its seven traditional glazes, including the yellow kizeto and green oribe glazes seen on this piece, and its twelve decorative techniques passed down through generations of local craftsmen.
