Published on the occasion of Nobuyoshi Araki’s 2001 solo exhibition at Taka Ishii Gallery in Tokyo, Shikijo-kyo is a compact exhibition catalogue featuring a series of photographs overpainted by the artist. The publication includes images of female nudes, bondage, flowers, skies, urban scenery, Araki’s balcony and his beloved cat Chiro. Araki applies vivid red, yellow, green and blue paint directly over the photographic images, tracing bodies, obscuring backgrounds and adding spontaneous lines across the surface. Through this combination of photography and painting, familiar motifs from Araki’s work are transformed into intense and highly personal images. Eroticism, humour, everyday life and the recurring tension between life and death are brought together in a characteristically provocative series. A scarce exhibition publication by one of Japan’s most influential postwar photographers. CONDITION Fine. Signed by Nobuyoshi Araki. SHIPPING Shipped via EMS or DHL.
