Ancient Egyptian scarab featuring an engraved underside with a vertically arranged composition of symbolic hieroglyphic signs, dating to the Second Intermediate Period to the early New Kingdom, circa 1700–1500 BC. The base is decorated with a combination of hieroglyphic motifs that appear to include the ankh (symbol of life), a solar disk, and additional linear elements. Such symbolic arrangements are commonly found on scarabs of this period and generally express concepts associated with life, divine protection, regeneration, and royal or solar power, rather than functioning as long textual inscriptions. Scarab amulets were among the most characteristic objects of ancient Egyptian culture. They served as personal seals, protective amulets, and funerary objects, symbolizing rebirth, renewal, and the daily cycle of the sun. Scarabs bearing symbolic or auspicious hieroglyphic designs were widely used by both the living and the deceased. The engraving is executed in a style characteristic of the late Second Intermediate Period and the beginning of the New Kingdom, when symbolic combinations of hieroglyphs became particularly popular on personal amulets. Condition: Well-preserved with expected age-related wear. Minor surface abrasion and deposits consistent with age. Provenance: Formerly in the Madeleine & Erich Dammann Collection, Germany. Acquired during the owners' extensive travels between 1950 and 1970. Documented in Germany by 1970 and subsequently retained in continuous family ownership.
