Biography Watanabe Nangaku (1767-1813) Born in Kyoto. Painter of the late Edo period. His personal name was Iwao, his courtesy name was Iseki, and his art name was Nangaku. He was a leading disciple of Maruyama Okyo and one of the Ten Great Disciples of the Maruyama school. He specialized in bijin-ga (paintings of beautiful women) and also adopted techniques from Ogata Korin. In his later years he moved to Edo, associated with Tani Buncho and Sakai Hoitsu, and helped spread the Maruyama school there.
