This is a rare Japanese jingasa (samurai hat) believed to date from the late Edo to early Meiji period.
Unlike the more commonly encountered iron, leather, or wooden examples, this jingasa is constructed from an exceptionally fine woven plant fiber, creating a lightweight yet remarkably elegant form. The intricate radial weaving demonstrates a high level of traditional craftsmanship and gives the surface a refined texture reminiscent of finely woven hats.
The exterior is finished in deep black with countless small gold decorative accents scattered across the surface, producing a subtle yet sophisticated visual effect. The restrained decoration highlights the beauty of the woven structure rather than relying on elaborate lacquer painting.
Particularly noteworthy is the survival of its original cloth storage bag. The bag bears handwritten inscriptions reading:
「従垂水御到来」
「縷細工御笠」
「御納戸」
While some characters remain difficult to interpret with certainty, these inscriptions strongly suggest that the bag originally served as an official storage cover for the hat and may indicate its place of origin or administrative ownership. The survival of both the jingasa and its original storage bag is highly unusual.
Jingasa were lightweight military hats worn by samurai and foot soldiers from the Muromachi through Edo periods. Besides offering protection from the weather, they also served as practical equipment during travel and military campaigns.
Examples made from finely woven plant fiber are considerably less common than lacquered wooden or leather jingasa. Their lightweight construction reflects another fascinating aspect of traditional Japanese military craftsmanship.
The hat displays age-related wear, minor surface abrasions, and signs of long-term preservation consistent with its age. The storage bag also shows expected wear and staining accumulated over many decades, further enhancing its historical authenticity.
This is an exceptional collector's piece that combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship, military history, and the rare survival of its original storage bag, making it an attractive addition to any collection of samurai armor, Japanese textiles, or Asian antiques.
Complete examples of finely woven jingasa retaining their original inscribed storage bags are exceptionally scarce. Combining unusual materials, traditional craftsmanship, and remarkable historical preservation, this is a museum-worthy piece that would make a distinguished addition to any serious collection of Japanese samurai artifacts.
