Kumi Sugai (1919-1996) - Matin (1969) – Original Screenprint – E.A.

Title Kumi Sugai (1919–1996) – “Matin” (1969) – Original Screenprint – E.A. Description This is an original screenprint (Sérigraphie) titled “Matin”, created in 1969 by the internationally acclaimed Japanese-born, Paris-based artist Kumi Sugai (1919–1996). Sugai was a prominent figure of the post-war École de Paris, internationally recognized for his distinctive synthesis of Japanese aesthetics and Western geometric abstraction. After moving to Paris in 1952, he developed a highly recognizable visual language characterized by bold geometric forms, dynamic curves, strong contrasts, and graphic elements inspired by speed, road signs, and modern urban environments. His works are represented in renowned museum collections worldwide, including The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and Tate in London. Created in 1969, this striking work features bold red semi-circular forms, a vivid green field, and a distinctive black-and-white diagonal striped border. The strong chromatic contrasts and crisp geometric structure create a dynamic visual rhythm characteristic of Sugai’s highly recognizable style. The work is hand-signed “SUGAI” in pencil on the lower central area of the green field and inscribed “E.A.” (Épreuve d’artiste / Artist’s Proof) in pencil at the lower right. The reverse bears important original pencil annotations, including the title “Matin,” the date “1969,” and the technique “Sérigraphie” (screenprint). These annotations provide valuable additional documentation concerning the work’s title, date, and printing technique. Visual Appeal: A highly dynamic geometric composition featuring brilliant color contrasts, crisp hard-edge forms, and a strong graphic rhythm. The combination of vivid red and green with the black-and-white diagonal pattern creates a particularly striking visual impact and exemplifies Sugai’s distinctive approach to post-war geometric abstraction. Collectibility: A highly desirable Artist’s Proof from 1969 by an internationally recognized master of post-war abstraction. The original annotations on the reverse, documenting the title, date, and technique, add particular interest and appeal for collectors. Dimensions: Sheet size: approx. 42.0 × 38.0 cm Condition Unframed; sold as a loose sheet. Overall in very good vintage condition, with vibrant and well-preserved original colors. A very minor light foxing spot is visible in the upper margin area, consistent with the work’s age. The paper remains flat and clean, with the original annotations preserved on the reverse.
