Μια ξύλινη μάσκα - Baule - Ακτή Ελεφαντοστού (χωρίς τιμή ασφαλείας)

Baule Festive Mask Wood with ritual patina Bouaké Region, Côte d'Ivoire Private Collection Incl stand. This expressive Baule festive mask originates from the Bouaké region of central Côte d'Ivoire, one of the principal artistic centers of the Baule people. Baule masks from this area are known for their imaginative forms, refined carving, and their role in public performances and communal celebrations. The mask is distinguished by four raised horn-like projections on the top of the head, large protruding eyes, and a strongly modeled oval open mouth. These striking features create a powerful and animated expression, characteristic of Baule performance masks designed to capture attention during dance and festive events. The exaggerated facial elements emphasize vitality, presence, and the transformation of the performer into a symbolic character. In Baule masquerade traditions, such masks could represent spirits, animals, mythical beings, or socially recognized figures. Their purpose was not only aesthetic but also performative: through movement, music, and dance, the mask became an active presence within the community. The combination of the four horn-like elements, prominent eyes, and open oval mouth reflects the inventive character of Baule carving in the Bouaké region and represents a distinctive example of Côte d'Ivoire’s rich mask traditions. Baule art from the Bouaké region of Côte d’Ivoire is particularly known for its refined elegance, idealized human forms, and exceptional attention to personal beauty and status. As one of the main centers of Baule culture, Bouaké developed a sculptural style characterized by balanced proportions, smooth surfaces, and highly detailed hairstyles and ornaments. Typical features include serene facial expressions, lowered or half-closed eyes, carefully modeled faces, and elaborate coiffures that reflect ideals of beauty, prestige, and social identity. Compared with neighboring traditions, Bouaké Baule sculpture is often distinguished by its harmony, restraint, and emphasis on perfection rather than dramatic expression.
