Μια ξύλινη μάσκα - Guro - Ακτή Ελεφαντοστού (χωρίς τιμή ασφαλείας)

Guro festival mask Painted wood with ritual patina Gohitafla region, central Côte d’Ivoire Mid 20th century, circa 1950–1970 Private Collection Incl stand This expressive Guro festival mask from the Gohitafla region of central Côte d’Ivoire combines a finely carved female face with an elaborate sculptural superstructure depicting two kalao (hornbills) standing beak to beak. Narrative mask compositions of this kind are among the most accomplished creations of Guro sculpture, combining elegant facial idealization with symbolic imagery that communicates cultural values and spiritual concepts. The Gohitafla region is particularly renowned for producing masks with refined, elongated facial features and complex superstructures carved in the round. Workshops in this area developed a distinctive sculptural language characterized by harmonious proportions, carefully balanced compositions and the vivid use of polychrome pigments. The present example exemplifies this regional style through its graceful female face with half-closed almond-shaped eyes, geometric coiffure and the remarkable pair of hornbills crowning the mask. The two kalao birds, facing one another with their beaks touching, form the central symbolic element of the composition. Throughout the forest regions of Côte d’Ivoire, the hornbill is regarded as a powerful and auspicious bird, associated with wisdom, communication, fertility and harmony. Depicted in symmetrical dialogue, the pair may evoke ideas of balance, reciprocity and unity, themes that resonate strongly within Guro ceremonial traditions. Their stylized geometric forms integrate seamlessly into the architectural composition of the mask, demonstrating the sculptor's sophisticated understanding of rhythm and volume. Masks of this type were performed during festivals, funerary ceremonies and important community celebrations, where music, dance and costume animated the carved object as the embodiment of spiritual forces and ancestral values. Rather than existing as independent sculptures, they functioned within elaborate masquerades in which performance completed the meaning of the work. The present example displays confident carving, balanced proportions and a richly aged surface with surviving traces of black, blue, red and yellow pigments. The elegant modelling of the face, the accomplished rendering of the paired kalao birds and the deep ritual patina are consistent with the finest sculptural traditions of the Gohitafla region during the mid-20th century.
