A rare pair of traditional Japanese Menburyu ceramic masks from Saga Prefecture, Japan, made by Kahei Furuse (古瀬嘉平). Menburyu is a traditional folk performing art associated with Saga Prefecture in Kyushu. These striking masks feature expressive demon-like faces with long light-coloured hair and vivid black, dark brown, red and gold decoration. This lot consists of a matching pair: one male (Otoko) and one female (Onna) mask. The male mask is distinguished by its open mouth. The original paper documentation identifying Kahei Furuse as the maker is included, together with the original boxes marked for the male and female masks. The boxes show age-related wear and deterioration. The masks are decorative ceramic works and make impressive examples of Japanese folk art, suitable for display or collection.
