Item Description This is a cast-bronze flower vase of Takaoka copperware (Takaoka dōki), the celebrated metalwork tradition of Takaoka in Toyama Prefecture. The form is a full, rounded, slightly flattened body rising to a short narrow neck and a small mouth, on a neat recessed foot. The surface is finished with a soft green verdigris (rokushō) patina, mottled with delicate tones of turquoise, pink, and ochre, and accented with passages of gold leaf. This green-and-gold treatment is a deliberate artistic patination, evoking the beauty of ancient excavated bronze, and is the very heart of the Takaoka aesthetic, often described as "the craft of appreciating patina." The interplay of quiet green and warm gold gives the piece a serene, timeless presence, well suited to a single seasonal flower or to display on its own. It comes with its original signed wood box (tomobako). The accompanying tomobako shows light age to the wood. Maker / Background Takaoka copperware (高岡銅器 Takaoka dōki), Toyama Prefecture. Takaoka copperware dates back to the early Edo period, over four hundred years ago, and in 1975 became the first copperware to be designated a National Traditional Craft of Japan. Takaoka accounts for roughly 95% of all copperware produced in Japan, and is the country's foremost centre for art bronze, producing everything from temple bells and large bronze statues to fine flower vases, incense burners, and tea utensils. Its defining techniques are casting, engraving (chōkin), inlay (zōgan), and above all a distinctive colouring (chakushoku) process, in which artisans draw out rich, unique surface tones from the metal itself. This vase bears the maker's inscription on the accompanying wood box; however, the signature is not clearly legible, and the specific artist has not been identified.
