Καρολινγιανική / Εποχή των Βίκινγκ Μπρονζέ καρφίτσα σε σχήμα δίσκου - 21 mm (χωρίς τιμή ασφαλείας)

Material: Bronze Dimensions: 21 mm Condition: Good condition, with age-related surface deposits and patination. Remains of the original fastening construction are preserved on the reverse. No shipping outside the European Union. Due to complex export regulations concerning cultural goods, this item cannot be shipped outside the EU. Please ensure you have a delivery address within the European Union before placing a bid. Provenance information: Object Registration ID: 896 The current owner (S.N.J. S.) purchased the item in Leeuwarden. The previous owner, H. vd M. from Leeuwarden (The Netherlands), stated that the object had been in his collection since the 1990s. According to the previous owner, the object had previously been in a private collection in The Netherlands since the 1990s. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: This small bronze disc brooch belongs to the material culture of the Carolingian and Viking Age, approximately the 8th–10th century A.D. Circular brooches were personal ornaments as well as functional dress fittings, used to secure garments while providing a visible element of decoration. The surviving fittings on the reverse confirm its original function as a brooch. Despite its modest dimensions, the object has considerable visual character. The circular face preserves traces of contrasting surface decoration beneath the accumulated patina and deposits of age. Its present appearance is the result of many centuries of burial and preservation, while the surviving construction on the reverse provides an important connection with the way the object was originally worn. The period to which the brooch dates was one of profound change in north-western Europe. During the reign of Charlemagne (768–814), Carolingian authority expanded across much of the Low Countries. At the same time, the North Sea and major river systems connected the Frankish territories with England and Scandinavia. Important trading centres such as Dorestad became points of exchange for people, commodities, coins and objects of personal adornment. From the early 9th century onwards, Scandinavian activity became increasingly important within these same networks. Vikings appeared not only as raiders, but also as traders, settlers and political actors. Consequently, objects from the 8th–10th centuries in north-western Europe often belong to a cultural environment in which Carolingian, regional and Scandinavian traditions existed alongside one another. Without a documented find context, the present brooch cannot be assigned more specifically to one of these groups. Brooches were produced by specialised metalworkers using established forms and techniques. They formed an important category of personal jewellery, combining practical fastening with decorative display. Comparable dress accessories circulated through the extensive commercial and cultural networks linking the Frankish Rhineland and the Low Countries with the North Sea world and Scandinavia. As a surviving piece of early medieval personal adornment, this brooch is more than a decorative archaeological object: it is an individual work of historical craftsmanship made to be worn on the body. Its compact form, surviving surface character and original fastening elements preserve the physical evidence of its former use, providing a direct and tangible connection with everyday life in north-western Europe during the Carolingian and Viking Age.
