True to its name—which literally means "to calm the wind"—it prevents the scroll from swaying, curling up, or becoming damaged by the wind. It also helps smooth out wrinkles and ensures the scroll hangs straight and beautifully due to its optimal weight. Additionally, it adds a touch of elegance and seasonal flair to the *tokonoma* (alcove).
