Background Information: This bronze plate buckle fitting dates to the Early Medieval period and formed part of a belt assembly used throughout northwestern Europe during the 6th–8th centuries A.D. Belts were essential items in daily life, serving not only to secure clothing but also to carry knives, pouches, tools, and other personal possessions. The front is decorated with a stylised zoomorphic motif. Although centuries of wear have softened some of the details, the design appears to depict a highly abstract animal figure rendered in the artistic tradition commonly known as Animal Style. This distinctive decorative language flourished among Germanic peoples including the Frisians, Saxons, Merovingians, and related groups. Characteristic features include prominent eyes, flowing lines, intertwined bodies, and highly stylised animal forms.
