Dial and Hands
The well-preserved and attractive silver dial features a sunburst finish in excellent condition. Applied baton indices remain clean, complementing the crisp and fully intact text. The lume plots are present and display consistent aging across the dial. The original baton hands show age-appropriate surface oxidation, and their luminous material matches the dial plots perfectly.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel Oyster case presents honest wear, characterized by moderate scratches and signs of previous polishing that have slightly softened the lug profiles. Significant pitting is visible between the lugs at the six o'clock position. The distinctive engine-turned bezel frames the dial, showing moderate wear and a softening of its detailed texture. A domed acrylic crystal with a cyclops magnifier protects the dial, displaying light surface scratches from normal use. The watch is fitted with its signed Rolex coronet crown, featuring an underline detail, which shows normal handling wear.
Movement
Inside beats the highly regarded Rolex caliber 1570 automatic chronometer movement. The plates and bridges are clean, finished with perlage and brushing, and feature the distinctive pink reversing wheels. Engravings on the movement indicate twenty-six jewels and adjustment to five positions and temperature. There are no obvious signs of corrosion or damage. The timegrapher recorded +9+11s/day. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece. The movement was serviced on 6 August 2026.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a casual black leather strap featuring white contrast stitching, which appears lightly used.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The movement was serviced on 6 August 2026 and, supported by the recorded timegrapher result, is performing very strongly. The dial remains in excellent condition with a beautiful sunburst finish, while the hands show age-appropriate oxidation. The case and engine-turned bezel display moderate scratches and wear, with softening to the edges from previous polishing. Notably, there is significant pitting visible between the lugs at six o'clock. The crystal shows light surface scratches, and the leather strap presents minimal wear.
Dimensions
The case measures 34mm (excluding the crown).
Remarks
This reference 1501 offers a highly attractive silver sunburst dial and the reliable performance of the caliber 1570 chronometer movement. The engine-turned bezel provides a distinctive visual texture, making this a compelling choice for enthusiasts of classic 1960s design.
History
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date was introduced as a slightly smaller alternative to the Datejust, offering the same robust Oyster case and chronometer-certified movement in a 34mm format. The reference 1501 is distinguished by its engine-turned bezel, which provided a sportier aesthetic compared to the smooth bezel of the standard reference 1500. Produced during the late 1960s, this model utilizes the caliber 1570, a movement celebrated by collectors for its durability and precision during this era of mechanical watchmaking.
