Βάζο - Πήλινα - Ιαπωνία - Κεραμικό βάζο σε μορφή πεπονιού από τον Teraike Toshu - Kinginsai Chrysanthemum
Item Description
This is a lobed, melon-shaped ceramic vase by Teraike Toshu (寺池陶秋 Teraike Toshu, 1907-1980), decorated with vertical bands of chrysanthemum motifs rendered in gold and silver overglaze enamel (kinginsai) against a soft celadon-green ground. The body is divided into gently ribbed panels rising to a slender neck and flared rim, a classic form associated with mid-20th century Japanese studio ceramics.
Teraike was born in Kanazawa; his given name was Shigeo. He completed training at the Kyoto Ceramic Testing Institute and studied under the ceramicist Kiyomizu Rikuwa. Over the course of his career he was selected for and received awards at the Imperial Fine Arts Exhibition (Teiten), the Bunten, and the Nitten, three of Japan's most prestigious juried art exhibitions.
The foot ring bears an impressed signature reading "Toshu saku" (made by Toshu), confirming the piece as his work.
The vase is offered together with its original wooden storage box (tomobako), a paper identification tag (shiori), and a yellow wrapping cloth (tomogire), all of which support its provenance.

Condition
The vase itself is in overall clean condition with no chips or cracks. A small area of blackening (oxidation) is present within the silver overglaze, visible in the accompanying photographs but not obtrusive to the eye. The wooden tomobako shows light sun toning consistent with age, and the underside of the box lid has a small mark and a spot of soiling.
Artist Profile
Teraike Toshu (1907-1980) was a Japanese ceramic artist born in Kanazawa; his given name was Shigeo. He completed his training at the Kyoto Municipal Ceramics Research Institute and subsequently studied under Shimizu Rokiwa (清水六和, 1875-1959), the fifth-generation head of the Kiyomizu Rokubei ceramic lineage and a juror for the Teiten's craft division. Through this mentorship, Toshu was active within the circle of Kyoto's official exhibition tradition, and over the course of his career he was selected for and received awards at the Teiten, Bunten, and Nitten, three of Japan's most prestigious juried art exhibitions. He is also known as the father of ceramist Teraike Shizuto (b. 1933), who later established his own reputation as a Nitten-affiliated potter.
