A traditional Japanese Noh mask depicting Suji Ayakashi (筋怪士), a powerful and intense male spirit mask associated with warriors and vengeful spirits. Suji Ayakashi is a distinctive type of Ayakashi mask, characterized by the strongly carved veins (suji) appearing on the forehead and temples. The fierce expression, deeply carved facial features, wide eyes and exposed golden-coloured teeth create a striking and dramatic appearance. This type of mask is particularly associated with the representation of the spirit of a warrior who has died with strong resentment or attachment. It is famously used in the Noh play Funa Benkei, in which the vengeful spirit of the warrior Taira no Tomomori appears before Minamoto no Yoshitsune.
