Σίδηρος (Χυτός) - Matstutaka 松鷹 - Τυχερό γούρι που φέρνει καλή τύχη: γεράκι που κάθεται πάνω σε βράχο - Shōwa period (1926-1989)
This is an impressive Japanese iron sculpture depicting a hawk with its wings fully spread, perched on a tree stump. The dynamic pose conveys the strength, dignity and powerful presence traditionally associated with the hawk.
The hawk is beautifully modelled with carefully detailed feathers, a sharp curved beak, expressive eyes and powerful talons gripping the branch. Its wings are spread dramatically on both sides, giving the sculpture a strong sense of movement and creating an impressive silhouette when viewed from the front or side.
The hawk is mounted on a realistically modelled tree stump and branch. The surface of the wood is decorated with detailed bark patterns, while a small pine branch is placed among the branches, adding a distinctly Japanese decorative character to the composition.
The contrast between the dark metallic finish of the hawk and the warm brown finish of the tree creates an attractive visual effect. The combination of the bird, tree and pine branch also gives the piece a particularly elegant and traditional Japanese aesthetic.
In Japan, the hawk (taka) has long been regarded as an auspicious symbol. Because hawks soar high into the sky with their powerful wings, they have traditionally been associated with strength, ambition, success and the ability to rise above difficulties. Hawk motifs have therefore been particularly appreciated as symbols of good fortune and advancement.
The dynamic posture of this sculpture makes it especially suitable for display. The wide-spread wings give the piece a strong three-dimensional presence, while the detailed tree stump provides a naturalistic base for the bird.
The two wings are detachable and are normally secured to the body with screws. For safe transportation, the wings will be removed before shipping and carefully packed separately inside the box. They can be reattached by the recipient.
This is an attractive piece for collectors of Japanese metalwork, Japanese decorative arts, bird sculptures and traditional Japanese art objects, as well as for those who appreciate the symbolism of the hawk in Japanese culture.
The combination of the dramatically spread wings, finely detailed hawk, richly textured tree stump and traditional pine motif gives this sculpture a particularly striking presence. It is not only a decorative object, but also a beautiful expression of the Japanese appreciation of the hawk as a symbol of strength, success and good fortune.
