A striking large antique hand-knotted Central Asian tribal rug measuring approximately 400 x 180 cm (13'1" x 5'11"). The rug displays a wonderful traditional Ersari/Beshir Turkmen design, with a rich red/madder-coloured ground decorated with numerous stylised geometric and floral motifs. The field is surrounded by several highly decorative geometric borders in red, indigo blue, cream, ochre and brown. The design and colour palette are characteristic of the wider Ersari/Beshir weaving tradition of the Amu Darya region of Central Asia. The rug has considerable age and character, with attractive natural colour variation and signs of its long history of use. CONDITION: Please study all photographs carefully. The rug has age-related wear, including areas of low/worn pile and exposed foundation, together with repairs/conservation to some edges and ends.
