Its fibers radiate outward from a black pupil with the patience of tree rings, and one thin arc of light crosses the surface like the last trace of something that once burned there. Two tears rest at the lower lid, caught mid fall, neither given permission to drop nor to be wiped away. No paint. No print. No ink. The entire image, storm, birds, iris, tears, is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built through controlled surface damage rather than pigment. What looks etched by feeling was in fact built through removal, the image called out of the material rather than laid onto it. The image is always present, seen even in a dim room, but light gives it its full weight. Under a directed source the scratches catch and hold that light, the storm gains depth, the birds sharpen against the clouds, and the iris seems to widen with contrast. As an artist, I am driven by a constant desire to explore new visual languages.
