Hanging Scroll (掛軸)|Ink on Paper, Enso (円相) - Kobayashi Taigen (小林太玄, b.1938 ) - Ιαπωνία (χωρίς τιμή ασφαλείας)

Item: Japanese Hanging Scroll (掛軸), Ink on Paper, Enso (円相) "Willows Are Green, Flowers Are Red" 「柳緑花紅」, by Kobayashi Taigen Artist: Kobayashi Taigen (小林太玄,b.1938 ) Technique: Ink painting on paper Overall Scroll Size: approx. H 122.5 × W 54.5 cm (H 48.2 × W 21.5 in) Painting Area Size: approx. H 34.5 × W 51.5 cm (H 13.6 × W 20.3 in) Materials: Paper, silk brocade, wooden roller ends Period: Late Showa era, c.1975–1989 Tomobako (共箱) Dimensions: H 6.8 × W 62 × D 7.5 cm (H 2.7 × W 24.4 × D 3.0 in) Included: A pair of stone jizai, Paulownia wood tomobako (共箱) This is a work by Kobayashi Taigen (小林太玄), former head priest of Ōbai-in (黄梅院) of Daitoku-ji Temple, Rinzai school of Japanese Zen Buddhism. He assumed the position of head priest of Ōbai-in in 1975 (Showa 50). A renowned Zen priest and calligrapher, he specialised in Zen calligraphy and Enso (円相) paintings. His works are widely used for tea room decoration and appreciation in refined spaces. This scroll features a single-stroke Enso (円相,Zen circle). The Enso is an iconic Zen symbol representing enlightenment, the wholeness of the universe and emptiness. This Enso has an opening, symbolising acceptance of imperfection and endless renewal. Accompanied by the Zen phrase "Willows Are Green, Flowers Are Red" 「柳緑花紅」, meaning willows naturally turn green and flowers naturally bloom red; all things reveal their true nature. The brushwork is simple and ethereal. This single-stroke Enso possesses full vitality and carries a profound Zen atmosphere. An artist’s seal “無尽蔵” is stamped at the upper right corner. The signature “Taigen” together with two artist name seals appears on the left side. Original Japanese silk brocade mounting with wooden roller ends. A pair of Japanese stone jizai with woven knots and long tassels are included, elegant for display. Comes with Paulownia wood tomobako (共箱). Due to age, the paper shows natural yellowing over time, minor creases, dust deposits and faint old stains. The mounting remains intact; the painting area has no tears or damage. Roller ends are well preserved. The tomobako (共箱) shows signs of ageing and dust accumulation. Overall in good condition relative to its age.
