A striking Japanese carved wooden Shishigashira (獅子頭 / lion head) by an artist signing as Koho (光峰), decorated with traditional polychrome pigments and gold-colored detailing. The piece is carefully carved from wood with a powerful expression, featuring large eyes, pronounced facial features, an open mouth, and the dynamic appearance characteristic of Japanese Shishimai (lion dance) masks. The vivid coloring and gold decoration enhance the sculptural details and give the lion head a strong ceremonial presence. Shishigashira are traditionally associated with Shishimai and Kagura performances, appearing in festivals, shrine ceremonies, and regional folk performing arts throughout Japan. The lion dance has long been regarded as an auspicious tradition connected with driving away evil, purification, protection, good health, and good fortune. The work bears the maker’s signature/mark “Koho” (光峰) and is accompanied by its wooden storage box with inscription (hakogaki), adding further interest for collectors and providing useful information regarding the work’s attribution. This piece would appeal to collectors of Japanese wood carving, Shishimai, Kagura, folk performing arts, masks, and traditional sculpture. As an older wooden work, it may show paint or gold wear, scratches, stains, cracks, chips, discoloration, repairs, or other age-related wear. Please examine all photographs carefully for the carving, signature, painted surface, box inscriptions, dimensions, and overall condition.
