19th century Chinese Export silver-mounted Malacca walking cane, c. 1880–1900 A late 19th century Chinese Export walking cane, the Malacca shaft surmounted by a repoussé silver knob worked in high relief with a continuous narrative scene of figures amongst trees and traditional architecture. The top is engraved with foliate decoration surrounding a prominent period ownership inscription, “Rev. W. M. Lauder”, executed in elaborate Victorian script. The inscription identifies the cane as having belonged to a clergyman and provides an unusual surviving record of its original ownership. The silver mount is unmarked and has been acid tested for silver. In good antique condition, with age-related surface wear, light scratching and minor dents to the silver. The repoussé decoration remains well defined. The Malacca shaft retains a warm, naturally aged surface with marks and wear consistent with use.
