A Rustic Irabo Tea Bowl – Earthy Texture and Traditional Japanese Tea Aesthetics This distinctive Japanese matcha tea bowl (chawan) is made in the traditional Irabo (伊羅保) style, admired for its rough, sandy texture and natural earthy appearance. The bowl features a warm combination of golden brown, ochre and dark iron-brown tones. Its finely granular surface is enriched by subtle variations in the glaze, creating an organic appearance that changes beautifully under different lighting. The gently flared rim and rounded body form a balanced silhouette, supported by a compact circular foot. The interior displays an attractive mottled surface with small natural speckles and subtle firing variations. Rather than relying on painted decoration, the bowl expresses its character through the texture of the clay, the movement of the glaze and the effects of firing. About Irabo Tea Bowls Irabo tea bowls originated within the Korean ceramic tradition and became highly appreciated by Japanese tea practitioners during the late 16th and 17th centuries. The name Irabo is traditionally associated with the rough, slightly irritating texture of the ceramic surface. These bowls are valued for their understated beauty, irregularities and tactile qualities, which harmonize with the Japanese tea ceremony and its appreciation of natural materials. This piece follows that tradition with its richly textured surface, restrained form and earthy coloration. Wooden Box and Attribution The bowl is accompanied by an inscribed wooden storage box bearing the designation Irabo and an additional handwritten signature with a red seal.
