Περιγραφή από τον πωλητή
Gerhard Richter: Seestück II, 1970
Με χειρόγραφη υπογραφή. Μία από τις πρώτες εκδόσεις της διάσημης σειράς Seestück του Ρίχτερ.
Μ hardly a motive is more closely associated with Gerhard Richter than his Seestücke. Between 1969 and 1970, the sea-pictures series emerged, in which Richter confronts the Sublimity of Romantic landscape painting with the sober gaze of photography. How highly this body of work is valued today is shown by the painting „Seestück (leicht bewölkt)“ from 1969, which was auctioned at Christie’s in 2012 for over 19 million US dollars. The edition „Seestück II“ arose in direct connection with this series and belongs to Richter’s earliest and most sought-after prints.
The Motif
A rough sea under a heavy, cloud-covered sky, the horizon lies exactly in the center of the image. What seems like a single, perceived moment is constructed: Richter assembled the image from photographs of the Canary Islands; sky and sea originate from different shots. The Vorlage can be found in the „Atlas“, Richter’s lifelong image archive (Atlas Blatt 184, Seestücke, Foto Collagen, 1969). Thus „Seestück II“ is a key example of Richter’s central question: How much truth is contained in an image that looks like reality?
The print in four colors—yellow, red, blue and black—creates the typical, slightly otherworldly coloration of early photo-painting; the deep black background frames the depiction and makes the cool blue of the sea shine particularly intensely.
