Japanese Decorative Tray – Two Cranes, Rising Sun and Gold Maki-e This elegant Japanese square tray dates from the early Showa period (late 1920s to early 1930s). It features two flying cranes, a vivid red rising sun, and flowing golden waves against a glossy black background. The composition is both striking and harmonious. Two cranes glide gracefully across the surface, while the red sun rises above a dramatic arrangement of waves and swirling currents. The intricate gold decoration creates a beautiful contrast with the deep black ground, highlighting the movement of the water and the elegance of the birds. In traditional Japanese art, cranes symbolize longevity and good fortune, while the rising sun represents hope and new beginnings. Combined with the waves, these motifs create an auspicious design inspired by traditional Japanese decorative arts. The surface is decorated with gold maki-e, a traditional Japanese lacquer decoration technique in which gold powder is used to create detailed designs. The reverse features a fine gold nashiji finish, with countless tiny gold-coloured specks covering the surface. This delicate finish complements the elaborate decoration on the front, making both sides of the tray visually appealing. The tray is believed to be made of wood with a lacquered finish.
