Βάζο Ikebana - Μπρούντζος, Όμορφο ανάγλυφο γερανού σε χρυσό και ασήμι, μεγάλο, 26 εκ., Tomobako - Ιαπωνία - Keiyu 啓佑
About This Piece
A substantial bronze vase with a deep glossy black surface accented by bold red patterns, beautifully contrasted by two cranes in gold and silver spreading their wings across the front.
Form and Presence
One of the strongest features of this piece is its substantial size and weight, measuring approximately 26 cm in height and weighing approximately 2,150 g.
The vase has a broad, rounded body that narrows into a slender neck before opening outward at the rim. Its wide body and substantial base create a solid, weighty form.
The predominantly black surface is decorated with areas of red extending across the body and shoulder, creating a clear contrast between the two colours.
Crane Design and Inlay
Another major highlight is the pair of gold and silver cranes (双鶴, Sōkaku) decorating the front of the vase.
Both cranes are depicted in flight with their wings fully extended. The upper crane is rendered in gold and the lower crane in silver. Fine lines define the individual feathers, while the long necks and legs are also carefully articulated.
The gold and silver decoration is executed using inlay (象嵌, Zōgan).
A pine tree is depicted beneath the cranes. Against the black and red body, the two cranes in gold and silver stand out prominently.
About the Artist and Takaoka Bronze Ware
This bronze vase is by Keiyu (啓佑), an artist associated with Takaoka Bronze Ware (高岡銅器).
The lid of the original wooden box bears the inscription “Keiyu saku” (啓佑作, “made by Keiyu”), together with the artist’s seal.
Takaoka Bronze Ware is a metalworking tradition that developed in the Takaoka area of Toyama Prefecture, Japan, producing a wide range of bronze objects including vases. Takaoka Bronze Ware was designated a Traditional Craft by the Japanese government in 1975.
This vase combines a predominantly black body with red decoration, while the front features two cranes in gold and silver inlay with a pine tree below.
Period and Commemorative Inscription
This piece dates from Heisei 9 (1997).
Gold-coloured lettering on the underside of the vase records its commemorative nature together with the date.
Symbolism of the Cranes
Cranes have long been cherished in Japan as symbols of longevity and good fortune. Their association with longevity is reflected in the traditional Japanese saying, “A crane lives for a thousand years” (鶴は千年).
A pair of cranes, known as Sōkaku (双鶴), has also been used as an auspicious motif representing marital harmony and togetherness.
Cranes depicted with their wings spread in flight are also associated with ideas of progress toward the future, new beginnings, and hope.
Accompanying Items
The vase comes with its original wooden tomobako (共箱) and explanatory leaflet.
The lid of the tomobako bears the name of the artist, Keiyu, together with his seal.
