Mossi Biga Doll – Burkina Faso – Wood – Mid-20th Century
Origin / People: Mossi, Burkina Faso
Material: Carved wood with a warm reddish-brown patina
Dimensions: Height 16 cm; 17 cm including display stand
Provenance: Personally collected in Burkina Faso by the present owner in the early 1990s
Presumed age: 1960s–1970s
A finely carved miniature biiga doll from the Mossi people of Burkina Faso, distinguished by its elegant proportions, carefully executed incised decoration and beautiful reddish-brown patina.
Despite its modest height of only 16 cm, the figure displays all the characteristic features of the classical Mossi biiga: a broad, semicircular head representing an elaborate hairstyle, a long cylindrical neck, a highly stylised female torso with projecting breasts, and a circular base.
The sharply defined horizontal plane of the shoulders gives the figure a particularly architectural quality, contrasting with the slender vertical silhouette.
The head is decorated with an intricate arrangement of radiating and intersecting incisions, while the body bears finely carved geometric markings.
The wood displays a rich, warm patina, with darker areas of polish and subtle variations in colour, suggesting prolonged handling and use.
The overall impression is one of remarkable refinement and balance, with a sculptural presence that belies the object's small dimensions.
Cultural context
Among the Mossi of Burkina Faso, biiga — meaning "child" — refers to a traditional wooden doll associated with childhood, motherhood and fertility.
Generally carved by specialist woodworkers, often blacksmiths, these highly stylised female figures were given to young girls, who carried, dressed and cared for them in imitation of maternal practices.
Beyond their educational role, biiga dolls could accompany women into adulthood, becoming associated with marriage, fertility and the desire for children. Some were passed down within families from one generation to another.
Their distinctive abstract form, emphasising the hairstyle, breasts and elongated torso, is one of the most recognisable expressions of Mossi sculptural tradition.
Condition
Good overall condition, with surface wear and minor abrasions consistent with age and handling.
The attractive patina and finely incised decoration are well preserved.
Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.
Presented on a custom display stand, included in the sale.
