Val Saint Lambert “Valambert” Bicolour Crystal Powder Box with Lid – Belle Époque, Art Nouveau, 1908
No Reserve Price
A elegant antique covered powder box by Val Saint Lambert, belonging to the celebrated “Valambert” garniture de toilette collection, first documented in the 1908 catalogue and later incorporated into the Luxval range. Created during the Belle Époque, the model reflects the refined Art Nouveau aesthetic, combining delicate proportions with beautifully executed geometric decoration.
Made in two-colour crystal, combining brilliant clear crystal with a warm amber-yellow layer, the box features a particularly attractive interplay of colour, light and transparency. Its rounded, scalloped silhouette is decorated with a combination of diamond-cut patterns, raised geometric elements and amber-coloured panels that catch and reflect the light beautifully. The original fitted lid is crowned with an elegant radiating starburst design, completing the harmonious composition.
Originally intended as a powder box for an elegant dressing table, this charming piece is equally suitable for storing jewellery, rings, small personal treasures or even delicate sweets. Its timeless design also makes it a beautiful decorative object in a contemporary interior.
The box is preserved in excellent antique condition, with no chips to any of its exterior surfaces. There are only a few extremely minor imperfections on the inner fitting edge of the lid, concealed when the box is closed and most likely originating from the manufacturing process. These are discreet and do not affect its appearance or functionality.
A beautiful and increasingly collectible example of early Val Saint Lambert craftsmanship, combining the elegance of Belle Époque dressing-table accessories with the exceptional quality of Belgian crystal. More than a century after its creation, this charming little box remains both a practical accessory and a delightful decorative object.
Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks.
The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp.
The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics.
Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation.
