Roman solid silver Fortuna statuette. The finely detailed deity wears a draped chiton, her hair is neatly drawn back with a modius on top. She is holding a cornucopia on her left while her right arm is extending downwards, probably once holding a rudder.
The silver figure is mounted on a custom-made display stand (included in the sale). This statuette was probably put on display at a house shrine or altar for personal worship.
Height: ± 35,6 mm
Display base: ± 36 x 37,2 x 24,3 mm
Condition: good solid condition, very finely detailed features. The legs and rudder are no longer present. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. See images.
Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).
FORTUNA (or Greek goddess Tyche) is the goddess of fortune and the personification of luck. She is associated with the bounty of the soil and the fruitfulness of women. Frequently she was an oracular goddess consulted in various ways regarding the future.
Fortuna was worshiped extensively in Italy from the earliest times. Fortuna is often represented bearing a cornucopia as the giver of abundance and a rudder as controller of destinies, or standing on a ball to indicate the uncertainty of fortune.
