Historical context:
-> Coins were powerful instruments of communication in the ancient world. Rulers struck their image and ideals into coins, turning currency into one of history’s most enduring propaganda tools. These small objects passed daily through the hands of ordinary people, spreading messages of authority with every exchange.
-> Julian II: Roman Emperor from 361 - 363 AD and known as the last pagan Emperor. In Christian tradition he is remembered as Julian the Apostate for his rejection of Christianity.
He was a gifted administrator and a military strategist. In his early years as Caesar he was stationed in Gaul and recaptured lost Roman territories.
-> VOT X MVLT XX: Vows (prayers) on the tenth anniversary, more for this (hoped-for) twentieth anniversary.
