It is one of the 88 modern constellations; it was among the 48 constellations listed by the astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century. Its name comes from a hunter in Greek mythology. Orion is particularly visible on winter evenings in the Northern Hemisphere, as are five other constellations whose stars form the Winter Hexagon asterism. Orion's two brightest stars, Rigel (β) and Betelgeuse (α), are among the brightest stars in the night sky; they are both slightly variable supergiants. There are also six other stars brighter than magnitude 3.0, three of which form the short, straight line of the Orion's Belt asterism. Orion is also home to the annual Orionid radiant, the most powerful meteor shower associated with Halley's Comet, and the Orion Nebula, one of the brightest nebulae in the sky.
