A beautiful antique carnelian intaglio pendant /fob depicting an Athena set in 9 carat yellow gold. The figure depicted is Athena, the Greek goddess of war, identifiable by her helmet and classical features. The material used for the carving is carnelian, a reddish-brown variety of chalcedony. The intaglio is a carving technique, where the design is incised into the surface of the stone, creating a recessed image, as opposed to a cameo where the design is raised. The cameo has an exquisite clean cut, museum quality and it is set in beautifully 9 carat gold frame. This pendant/fob is highly detailed, the carving is exquisite, the helmet and hair are beautifully formed, the pony tail amazingly carved . Dating late 1800’s.
