Πανοπλία σαμουράι με τρομακτικό Menpō και συμβολικό έμβλημα χελώνας. - Ιαπωνία
Item Description:
This is a full set of Japanese samurai armor (yoroi), dating from the 14th year of the Tenpō era (1843), during the late Edo period. The armor is life-sized and comes with a complete range of original components, making it a remarkable example of the craftsmanship and martial culture of feudal Japan. Please note that without recognition from a famous appraisal organisation, we cannot certify the datation.
The kabuto (helmet) features a prominent maedate (crest) in the form of a turtle, a powerful symbol of longevity, strength, and resilience in Japanese culture. This finely cast turtle sits atop large gold-painted kuwagata (horns), drawing immediate visual impact. The menpō (facial guard) is made of lacquered iron and adds a fearsome expression to the set. The dō (cuirass) bears the distinct five-star kamon (family crest), likely identifying the samurai clan to which the original owner belonged.
Each section of the armor—including the kote (armored sleeves), haidate (thigh guards), suneate (shin guards), and kusazuri (tassets)—is made from lacquered iron plates laced with traditional silk cords and reinforced textile, demonstrating a balance between mobility and protection. The craftsmanship of the plates, the threading, and the choice of materials reflect Edo-period production, emphasizing both aesthetics and functionality.
This armor set is accompanied by its original wooden storage box, which not only houses the armor when not on display but also bears handwritten inscriptions on the interior of the lid.
Despite natural signs of age such as wear, fading, and rusting on metal components, the armor retains its full structure and visual impact. It is possible that some decorative parts are slightly posterior to the main structure, due to potential restoration. Whether for display, study, or collection, this set offers a rare and captivating glimpse into the warrior spirit of Edo-period Japan. Some part may be posterior.
Note: This set does not include a display stand (yoroi-kake).

Artist/Maker Profile:
Unknown maker. The armor is unsigned but attributed to the 14th year of the Tenpō era (1843) on the armor box, during the late Edo period. The family crest and turtle maedate suggest it was originally crafted for a samurai of notable rank or status.
