Status of South-Africa in the year of the Berlin Conference 1884 - at the brink of the so-called "Scramble for Africa", when massive colonization by the USA, the Ottoman Empire and 12 European countries was decided and initiated for Africa.
Historically important map, dated 1884, when Germany gained control over Great Namaqualand—part of what is now southern NAMIBIA .The formal acquisition began in the 1880s, culminating in Germany declaring the territory a protectorate in 1884 and marking the start of formal colonial rule.
British-Controlled Territories at that time were: The Cape Colony with Cape Town as its capital., Natal Colony and Little Namaqualand .
The Boer Republics (Independent Settler States) were Transvaal (South African Republic) and
Orange Free State.
Compiled by the famous and important Scottish cartographer Keith Alexander Johnston, this is the most updated and detailed map of the period in a critical year for South-Africa.
Printed on thick heavy paper . Very large map (61.5 x 49.5) with original center fold. Very fresh and good condition. 4 cm split into the map on bottom center fold, repaired with archival tape.
