From Jerusalem, Ancient terracotta oil lamp from the Roman period Ca. 3rd Cent. AD, Such lamps were the primary source of household and public lighting in antiquity, fueled by olive oil, which was abundant throughout the Mediterranean world.
Oil lamps in Roman society were not only functional but also carried symbolic and social meaning. They illuminated homes, workshops, and bathhouses, while also being used in temples, sanctuaries, and tombs. Many were decorated with motifs ranging from mythological scenes to Christian symbols in later periods, reflecting the diverse religious and cultural life of the Empire.
