These allow the wine to have more contact with the wood and the air. Tawny wines therefore breathe more, oxidising and ageing quickly. Due to the high level of oxidation, Tawny wines lose their initial red wine colour, gaining lighter amber tones and flavours of dried fruit such as walnuts or almonds.
