Order of the Black Star
— an abolished colonial government award of France. It was established on December 1, 1889, in Porto-Novo (the current capital of the Republic of Benin) by the future King Toffa of Dahomey.
On August 30, 1892, it received a new statute and on July 30, 1894, it was officially recognized by the French government as an award given for the spread of French influence in West Africa.
During the First World War, the order was awarded to a large number of officers from the armies of foreign countries allied with France
According to the changes made to the statute on July 14, 1933, the order could only be awarded to persons over 29 years of age who had served in French West Africa for at least 9 years.
Like other "colonial" orders of France, it was abolished by decree on December 3, 1963, in connection with the establishment of the National Order of Merit. Recipients retained the right to wear the insignia of the Order of the Black Star.
After the proclamation of independence of Benin, the order was used as a national award of this state (Order of the Black Star of Benin).
