Unknown - Qur'an - Persia - 1680

A illuminated miniature manuscript folio page from a 17th Century Persian Qur'an. Either side is of a quality that could be mounted hence labelled as 2 pages. The current front folio (as mounted) contains scripture from the final 10 verses of the Meccan chapter 71, Nuh (Noah) v.19-28, the header and first 4 verses of the Meccan chapter 72, Al-Jinn (The Jinn). The reverse folio (images 9g and 9h) contain the header for chapter 71 (Noah) and the first 18 verses of the chapter. In other words, the whole of chapter 71, Noah, is contained in this delightful miniature on the reverse and front. Chapter 71, describes how Noah strived to deliver the message to his people for 950 years, corresponding to the Toal number of Arabic letters in the chapter. He called them to the truth secretly and publicly, using logical arguments to prove the mercy and onenness of God. But his people persisted in denial, only to perish in the Flood. The beginning of chapter 72, The Jinn, gives an account of a group of Jin who fully submitted t the one true God once they heard the Prophet's recitation of the Qur'an. The Jinn were supernatural beings from Arabic and Islamic tradition, created from "smokeless fire," who can be either good or evil. They are distinct from humans and angels, possessing free will and the ability to take on different forms, such as human or animal. Generally unseen by humans, they can interact with the physical world, sometimes influencing or causing harm. The scripture is written in naskh script in black ink. Between this is Persian commentary in red separated by black horizontals lines. The whole scripture is framed with a thick gold frame. The chapter Surah (headings) are contained within a gold cartouche with arabesque book ends and written in larger red naskh script. In the margin of both sides are further notations written within gold arboreal decorations. A red and gold 'roundel' marks the start of chapter 72. The manuscript is in miniature which suggests it was made for an individual to carry with him on his journeys. It is a fine manuscript. Please note that shipping costs are not solely the cost of the postal delivery service itself. Included within the shipping price is the work undertaken to research the article, to mount it, for photography, for uploading to Catawiki, for preparation and packaging the article securely and for transporting the article to the postal delivery agent for processing.
