Hartmann Schedel/ Wohlgemut/ Pleydenwurff/Dürer. - The Nuremberg Chronicle (Liber Chronicarum) - 1493

Original incunabulum woodcut leaf CXXVI (126) from the Nuremberg Chronicle of Hartmann Schedel, the first German edition from 1493. An incunabulum (cradle print) is a book printed in Europe before 1 January 1501, when the printing press was still in its infancy, and of which the text is set in movable type. They are now rarely seen on the on the market. The Nuremberg Chronicle (Liber Chronicarum) by Hartmann Schedel is one of the most famous and best illustrated incunabula. The beautiful woodcuts were made by Michael Wohlgemut (1434/37-1519) and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff (1450-1494), a teacher of Albrecht Dürer. Dürer probably also contributed to the execution of many of the woodcuts for this incunabulum. The beautifully coloured woodcuts of folio CXXVI, 8 illustrations are shown: 1. Margaretha, a very beautiful virgin of Antioch, born of pagan parents, and consigned to the care of a nurse, voluntarily permitted herself to be baptized. 2. Maximilianus, of the city of Ceyla, born of noble and devout parents, a highly learned and virtuous man, was upon the death of St. Quirinus, the Laurian bishop, elected bishop by common consent. 3. Blasius, who flourished at this time in all piety and mildness, was elected bishop by the Christians in Sebaste, a city of Cappadocia 4. Juliana, a very illustrious virgin of Como, a city of Gaul, suffered many cruel tortures and punishments there at this time. 5. Primus and Felicanus, Roman spiritual men, having refused to sacrifice to idolatrous gods, were beheaded in this persecution after enduring many tortures. 6. Pamphilus, a Greek priest, and a relative of Eusebius of Caesarea, was a distinguished teacher of the Holy Scriptures. In these times, on the first day of June, he was martyred in the city of Caesarea, in Palestine. 7. Quintinus, a soldier of Gaul, suffered martyrdom at the hands of the emperor Maximianus on the last day of October. 8. Ruffus, highly renowned Roman soldier, was subjected to much oppression with his entire household by the emperor Diocletian, and became a martyr of Christ. On the verso side, the following illustrations are depicted: 1. A lineage of popes: Marcellus, Eusebius and Melchiades 2. COUNCIL OF SINUESSA: Marcellinus, who called the council for his own condemnation, appears in the center of the group, though not in sackcloth and ashes. The Holy Spirit, symbolized by a dove, hovers over the gathering. Sinuessa was situated on the seacoast and on the Via Appia in the midst of the fertile country of Campania. This is not a facsimile edition, but an original leaf printed in the 15th century - so 532 years old! Rare in coloured version. Dimensions: 43 x 29,5 cm Good condition, a few spots. Attention for US buyers: Due to recent postal restrictions shipping to the US can only be done by DHL, therefore higher shipping costs apply!
