The original series depicts the fifty-three post stations along the Tōkaidō route from Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto, including the departure point Nihonbashi and the final destination Sanjō Ōhashi, for a total of fifty-five scenes. This reprint faithfully follows the traditional hand-printing (mokuhanga) technique, capturing the delicate lines and vivid colours of Hiroshige’s masterpiece. This particular set consists of 55 sheets out of a total of 58 (52 prints plus 3 additional sheets). The prints for No.2 Shinagawa, No.51 Minakuchi, and No.52 Ishibe are missing. Each print is mounted on a paper mat; some are housed in individual envelopes, while others are not. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was one of the most renowned ukiyo-e masters of the Edo period, celebrated for his innovative compositions and atmospheric landscapes. His use of perspective and colour—especially the distinctive “Hiroshige Blue”—influenced many Western artists, including Monet and Van Gogh. A separate Japanese commentary booklet is included, but the outer case is missing. Some prints show some foxing due to age, while others remain in good used condition overall.
