Large 19th-century “Doorman / Porter” Trade Figure — Polychrome carved wood — circa 1850–1880 — Folk Art piece (130 cm tall)
Description:
Exceptional polychrome wooden figure representing a doorman or porter, carved and painted by hand.
Made of solid wood (likely pine or poplar), standing approximately 130 cm tall, this life-size trade figure was probably placed at the entrance of a pub, hotel, or theatre to greet visitors or to display menus and flyers.
The posture with parallel arms at chest height suggests it once held a small tray or advertising board, typical of mid-19th-century trade figures used in Europe and North America.
Executed with oil-based polychromy on gesso ground, the surface shows authentic craquelure, patina and wear consistent with over 150 years of age.
Original joints were glued (animal glue), later reinforced with oxidised nails, a period repair confirming prolonged use.
The figure wears a dark coat with gold details and a wide cravat/bow tie, consistent with the fashion of doormen and maître d’s between 1830–1860.
Overall in very good and stable condition for its age, with genuine surface wear, minor paint losses, and beautiful aged varnish.
Provenance:
Private collection, Spain.
Likely of European or American origin, mid-19th century.
