Coin: AR denarius of Emperor Septimus Severus, struck Rome 209 AD.
Obverse: SEVERVS PIVS AVG, laureate head right.
Reverse: PM TRP XVII COS III P P, Neptune standing left, holding a trident, foot on globe.
Diameter pendant: ± 120,3 mm
Reference: RSC 529, RIC 228, Sear 6346
Condition: very fine condition, wearable. Signs of wear consistent with age and use.

SEPTIMUS SEVERUS: seized power after the death of Pertinax in 193 AD ('Year of the Five Emperors'). He travelled to Britain in 208 AD and strengthened Hadrian's Wall. He is considered a strong and able ruler, the Roman Empire reached its greatest extent under his reign. He was succeeded by his sons Caracalla and Geta.
