Impressive view BETHANY, a village in Judea near Jerusalem, mentioned in the New Testament and best known for being the hometown of Jesus’ good friends, Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. According to Christian tradition and belief, Bethany was the place where Jesus performed the miracle of raising Lazarus from the dead.
Today the village is called Al-Azariya and visited by pilgrims who venerate the TOMB OF LAZARUS.
This original lithograph was drawn on location by the famous Scottish painter DAVID ROBERTS R.A. (1796-1864) in the year 1839 during the artist's trip to the Holy Land and surrounding area during 1838- 1839. Published in London by F.C.Moon on Oct.1, 1842 (this date is printed on the bottom margins) in the iconic monumental work: David Roberts, "The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia ", one of the most desirable and famous travel plate books in the 19th century.
Lithographed by Louis Haghe for the RARE FIRST ELEPHANT FOLIO EDITION , this "half-folio" lithograph ( net size :35 x 26cm) is part of the original Elephant folio page with text underneath (43cm x 59cm). Verso has a text referring to the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem.
Original tinted hand-finished lithograph on heavy paper. ORIGINAL TINTED UNCOLOURED LITHOGRAPHS of this series without modern colouring are nowadays hardly available, more so - the original text part, as retained here, was usually cut off.
Strong paper. Excellent clean condition.
