On July 25th, 1961, Pablo Picasso created a drawing that brings together two powerful symbolic elements: the sardana and the dove of peace. While this drawing is less well known than some of his other works related to peace, it belongs to his later period, marked by strong political and symbolic commitment.
The sardana, a traditional Catalan dance, is a recurring element in Picasso’s work. In fact, it became increasingly important in his representations over the years, especially around the 1960s. Picasso “linked the sardana to the values of brotherhood and peace.”
The first appearance of the sardana in one of Picasso’s works dates back to 1952. Over time, he began incorporating new elements and developed more elaborate representations of the dance.
Other examples include the drawing known as La sardana de la pau (The Sardana of Peace), which Picasso made at the Café de Ceret in 1953. There’s also the version published in the magazine Cavall Fort in 1954, and the colorful La sardana de l’amistat (The Sardana of Friendship), created in 1959 and later used for the neckerchief worn by participants at the World Festival of Youth.
