Extra Large Hand-carved swordfish tusk with traditional Maori Wheku and Tiki carving. Wheku, meaning 'carved face', depicts the face of an ancestor. The Wheku is generally found at the apex of the gable on a Wharenui, the Maori meeting house, and symbolizes​ an important ancestor after whom the house was named. The eyes of this Maori have been decorated with abalone shell, adding striking detail and giving homage to Maori tradition.
