Item Description
This exquisite guinomi (sake cup) is a striking work by contemporary Japanese ceramic artist Kimura Takashi (1981-), showcasing his masterful command of iridescent white glaze technique known as "Hakuyū Kōsai" (White Glaze with Lustrous Colors). The piece exemplifies Kimura's distinctive artistic approach, where traditional Japanese pottery meets modern sculptural expression.
The cup features an organically distorted form that captures the spontaneity of wood-fired ceramics. The white glaze reveals captivating variations across its surface, with areas of crystalline translucency that shimmer with rainbow-like iridescence reminiscent of raku-fired pieces. The lower portion displays dramatic ash deposits and natural flame markings in dark browns and blacks, creating a powerful contrast against the ethereal white upper section. These kiln effects are not merely decorative but represent the unpredictable dialogue between fire, clay, and glaze that defines traditional Japanese ceramic art.
The interior reveals a mesmerizing glossy brown glaze pool with subtle speckles, while the rough, unglazed foot ring speaks to the artist's commitment to maintaining tactile authenticity. This guinomi embodies the Japanese aesthetic principle of "yohen" (窯変) - the beautiful accidents that occur during firing, making each piece absolutely unique.
Kimura's work is characterized by abstract painterly use of glazes combined with sculptural, angular forms, earning recognition in contemporary ceramic circles. This piece represents his ongoing exploration of new expressions while honoring traditional Japanese pottery techniques.
