Sho Kato 加藤釥 (1927 - 2001)
He is a council member of the Nitten Exhibition and a member of the Japan Contemporary Craft Artists Association. He is an important figure in the world of Seto pottery.
Born in 1927 in a pottery workshop in Akazu, Seto City, Aichi Prefecture.
In 1997, he was recognized as a holder of the "Iron Glaze Technique of Pottery," an intangible cultural property designated by Seto City.
While drawing on the tradition of "Koseto," he has established a modern style that incorporates his own unique "blue glaze" and "gold leaf" techniques.
In addition to the typical green "Ao Oribe," they also produce many tea bowls and flower vases in "Kuro Oribe," which uses iron glaze.
Oribe ware has the following characteristics.
Deep green glaze: This ware pursues the beauty of the copper-green glaze, Oribe ware's greatest feature, and is characterized by a deep, lustrous green color.
Fusion of tradition and modernity: While cherishing the traditional Oribe patterns (floral and geometric designs) that have been passed down since the Momoyama period, the ware is also appealing for its bold, powerful forms and sophisticated designs that look great in modern spaces.
