【Product details】
This lot features a highly original and expressive wooden sculpture of Daikoku-ten, one of Japan's Seven Lucky Gods, likely dating from the Showa period. Far removed from the strict conventions of traditional Buddhist iconography, this piece is carved in a bold Folk Art style that emphasizes the raw texture of the wood and the vigorous energy of the chisel marks.
The artist has creatively reinterpreted the deity’s classic attributes within a simplified form. The figure holds the Mallet of Luck (Uchide no Kozuchi) against his chest and carries a large treasure sack on his back, while standing atop two rice bales that symbolize an abundant harvest. A distinctive feature of this sculpture is the unique, flower-like hat and a facial expression reminiscent of primitive masks or totem poles, imbuing the work with an exotic and modern artistic presence.
The surface is finished in a deep black, likely achieved through sumi ink or lacquer, which has worn away in various places over the decades to reveal the natural wood grain beneath. This natural wear creates a beautiful Wabi-sabi aesthetic, making it an excellent addition for collectors of Japanese folk art, rustic interior design, or unique religious sculptures.
The sculpture is in vintage condition and displays evident signs of age. A prominent vertical drying crack runs through the center of the hat, and finer age-related cracks are visible on the face. The black finish shows rubbing and loss throughout. Regarding the base, there is a large crack on the lower part of the left foot (rice bale). Crucially, visible traces of adhesive or resin are present within this crack and the central crevice on the back side, as well as on the soles of the feet. This indicates that the piece has likely been repaired, reinforced, or re-attached in the past. Please review the photos for condition details.
